TAPAS, TAPAS, & MORE TAPAS!!
If you haven’t visited Granada, Spain yet or haven’t heard the news, you’re surely missing out! In Granada, you are given free tapas with every drink you order whether it’s; beer, wine, or even a soft drink. These tapas aren’t like most of tapas you will receive for free in places like Madrid – which tend to be only a dish of nuts or a bit of crisps. In Granada, you can find tapas that vary in style and in size!
Here’s my count down for some of my favorite tapas places, in one of my favorite cities.
5.) Babbel World Fusion
This spot is located around the corner from Calle Elvira, which is where most of the Moroccan tourist shops are located, making this spot easy to find. This tapas spot allows you to choose from a menu that rotates. You can find the tapa list written on chalkboards around the restaurant. Like the name suggests, the menu has a fusion of tapas from all around the world. This restaurant is for meat-eaters, vegetarians, and even vegans 🙂 Some tapas typically offered are; fajitas, Tandoori Chicken, and Thai noodles. Another plus is the unique variety of drinks – my favorite is “The Good Cider.” Be sure to try to the peach flavor!
4.) Bar Poë
This small pub is popular with
locals and tourists from all over.
Bar Poë is tucked away in some of the side streets of Granada but is still very
centrally located. At Bar Poe, you get to choose your tapas from a small menu
that has some of everyone’s favorites. From Thai chicken, to grilled pork with
pineapple, and even two options for vegetarians – like the chickpea salad. This
spot is conveniently located around the corner form my next favorite tapas
spot.
3.) Om Kalsum
This small Moroccan Style tapas joint is a great spot to indulge in some Mediterranean tapas. This place is great for meat eaters and has plenty of veg/vegan friendly options as well. You can choose your tapa from a list – offering items such as kebab, falafel, and shawarmas. Enjoy your tapas and bevs while admiring the Moroccan decor. This place tends to get crowded during the nights, so swing by early if you want to snag a seat!
2.) Rosario Varela
This well designed and hip spot is located is the heart of Granada. You can find lots of other bars nearby – making this a great spot stop while hopping around. The tapas here are some of the tastiest and well-presented that I’ve found. They offer classic tapas such as jamon (Spanish ham) and tortilla (Spanish omelet with potatoes), as well as hip specialty seafood tapas. Another plus is the variety of drinks you get to enjoy with your tapas. You can choose from the entire list of specialty cocktails – the spicy strawberry mojito is my personal favorite ;). Granada tends to have sunny afternoons, so take advantage of the outside seating throughout the year!
1.) Bar El Peruano
This place is my number one spot for eatin good in Granada because the tapas are HUGE!! At Bar El Peruano, you can get yourself a full meal for around 2 euros. I take all my guests here when they come visit! This place is located about 15 minutes from the center of Granada, near the University. I highly recommend getting here early because this place gets packed and you may have to wait for a table. This place is both meat-eater and veg friendly, as well. Some of the tapas include a whole chicken drumstick with rice, mac & cheese, and vegan hot dogs. Most of the tapas come with fries or a salad. Be sure to check this place out and come hungry ;)!
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Be aware of Spaniard’s eating times. Kitchens at bars and restaurants are typically open from 1 PM till around 4 PM and don’t open back up until 8:00 PM.
- When ordering with a group, you usually can only pick two or three types of tapas for the table. Everyone gets their own tapa but you might have to agree on two different kinds of tapas you all would like to try.
- Service is generally slow in Spain, and if you want another tapa or your check you are going to have to let the waiter know.
- Always keep cash on you, some bars & cafes do not accept cards or there will be a minimum. So, it’s best to always have a bit of cash on you for a night out.
